Can I schedule an appointment without a referral?

Absolutely, we welcome patients with any orthopedic concerns. However, we recommend verifying with your medical aid provider to see if a referral is necessary.

What to bring

Recent X-ray:

If possible, please provide an X-ray related to your issue that is no more than 6 months old.

Additional Imaging:

In some cases, a CT scan or MRI may be necessary. We will discuss this with you based on your specific needs.

First consultation

Examination:

Dr. Dimitriou will conduct a thorough examination.

Review of Imaging:

You'll discuss any existing X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans. If needed, further imaging may be recommended.

Claims:

The consultation fee is claimed directly from your medical aid. Should the claim be rejected, please settle your account at reception.

Treatment Plan

Based on the diagnosis, we'll discuss the best course of action:

Conservative Management:

If appropriate, we'll recommend a non-surgical approach and schedule follow-up appointments.

Surgical Intervention:

If surgery is necessary, we'll discuss the procedure and schedule a date. Operation information is shared and consent is signed.

Referral:

If your condition falls outside Dr. Dimitriou's expertise, he will refer you to a qualified specialist.

Preparing for Surgery

Pre-operative Assessments:

Depending on your procedure, we may refer you for pre-op checks with a physiotherapist, pathology blood tests, and an anesthetist.

MyMobility registration:

Ina Mare will assist with the registration on the app for joint replacement patients.

Hospital Pre-admission:

You'll complete pre-admission paperwork with the hospital team.

Fasting:

Please remember not to eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your surgery.

Procedure administration

Cost Estimate if needed:

Ina Mare will provide a detailed cost estimate and quotation for Dr. Dimitriou's fees. Please note that this may include additional costs such as prostheses (if needed), anesthesiologist fees, in-hospital physiotherapy, or hospital fees.

Medical Aid Authorization:

Ina Mare will assist you in obtaining the necessary authorization for joint replacements from your medical aid for the procedure.

Communication:

We will keep you informed of the authorization number, medical aid tariffs, and what your medical aid covers.

Procedure day

Admission:

You'll be admitted to the hospital.

Communication with Family:

Dr. Dimitriou will contact your designated next of kin to discuss the outcome of the procedure.

Follow-Up Scheduling:

We'll arrange follow-up appointments before you're discharged.

Post-operation

Billing:

Medical bills from Dr. Dimitriou, will be submitted to your medical aid.

Follow-Up Appointments

We'll schedule follow-up appointments based on your specific procedure. These appointments are free of charge for up to 6 weeks after surgery.

Appointment Reminders:

You'll receive SMS reminders for your appointments.

Typical Check-Up Schedule

In general, check-ups are scheduled at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 months after surgery.
